UTM Parameters Explained

  • Source identifies where traffic came from, such as linkedin, newsletter or partner-name.
  • Medium identifies the channel or delivery method, such as paid-social, email or referral.
  • Campaign groups links that belong to the same initiative, launch or promotion.
  • Term can distinguish paid-search keywords or another targeting detail.
  • Content can distinguish creative variants, placements or calls to action within one campaign.

Source, medium and campaign are the most useful fields for a consistent reporting structure. Add term or content only when the extra distinction will be used in analysis.

Example Naming Convention

For a LinkedIn carousel promoting a spring product launch, you might use linkedin as the source, paid-social as the medium, spring-launch as the campaign and carousel-a as the content value. The labels are readable in a report and can be reused consistently across the team.

Use lowercase values, choose one separator and document shared names before publishing links. paid-social, paid_social and paidsocial become separate rows in many analytics tools even when they describe the same channel.

Before Sharing the URL

Open the generated link once to confirm the destination loads and retains every required parameter. Do not place personal information, customer names, email addresses or confidential audience details in UTM values because the full URL may appear in browser history, analytics systems and referrer data.
