Best Video Export Settings for Social Media

Practical social media video export settings for MP4, H.264, frame rate, bitrate, AAC audio, colour space, resolution, and vertical or horizontal formats.

Social platforms compress video. You cannot stop that.

What you can do is give them a clean source file that is easy to process.

A good social media export is not necessarily the biggest file, the highest bitrate, or the most technically impressive codec. It is a file that preserves enough detail, uses a widely supported format, matches the source frame rate, and fits the intended placement.

For most social video, a dependable starting point is:

  • Container: MP4
  • Video codec: H.264
  • Audio: AAC
  • Scan: Progressive
  • Pixels: Square
  • Colour space for normal SDR video: Rec.709 / BT.709
  • Frame rate: Match the source
  • Aspect ratio: Match the platform placement
  • Bitrate: High enough to preserve quality without creating an unnecessarily huge file

That setup works well for a large amount of Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, TikTok, and YouTube content.

Use MP4 unless you have a reason not to

MP4 is the most practical social video container because it is widely accepted and works well with H.264 video and AAC audio.

MOV is also supported in many places, but MP4 is generally the safest handoff format when a video will be uploaded to several platforms.

The container is not the same as the codec.

Think of it this way:

  • MP4 is the box;
  • H.264 is the way the video inside that box is compressed.

A file can be called .mp4 and still use different video codecs internally.

H.264 is still the safest default

Newer codecs can compress video more efficiently, but H.264 remains a dependable cross-platform choice.

YouTube’s published upload recommendations still list H.264 as a recommended video codec and MP4 as the container.

For social workflows, compatibility is often more valuable than saving a small amount of file size.

H.264 is especially sensible when:

  • clients upload the files themselves;
  • one export goes to multiple platforms;
  • the video passes through scheduling tools;
  • the destination’s exact codec support is uncertain.

Match the frame rate to the original footage

One of the simplest export rules is also one of the most important:

Do not change frame rate without a reason.

If you recorded at 25 fps, export at 25 fps.

If you recorded at 30 fps, export at 30 fps.

If you recorded at 60 fps and the final video genuinely benefits from 60 fps, keep it.

YouTube’s upload guidance recommends uploading using the same frame rate as the original recording, and the same principle is a good default for social media in general.

Changing 25 fps footage to 30 fps does not create more real motion information. It creates conversion work and can introduce uneven motion.

24, 25, 30, or 60 fps?

There is no single best frame rate for every social video.

24 fps

Good for:

  • cinematic-looking content;
  • interviews;
  • controlled productions;
  • storytelling where a film-like cadence is intentional.

25 fps

A natural choice in PAL-region workflows and common in Europe.

If your camera and timeline are already 25 fps, there is usually no reason to convert.

30 fps

A very common general-purpose social frame rate.

Good for:

  • talking-head content;
  • tutorials;
  • UGC;
  • product demos;
  • screen recordings.

50 or 60 fps

Useful for:

  • sports;
  • fast movement;
  • gaming;
  • smooth camera movement;
  • footage that may be slowed down.

Higher frame rates contain more frames and generally require more bitrate to preserve the same visual quality.

Use progressive video

Social media video should be progressive rather than interlaced.

If your source is old interlaced footage, deinterlace it before export.

Modern phones, web video players, and social platforms are built around progressive playback.

Interlacing is a legacy broadcast concept and usually creates more problems than benefits in online delivery.

What bitrate should you use?

Bitrate controls how much data is allocated to video over time.

Too low and the video falls apart.

Too high and you create a very large file that the platform will still recompress.

The right answer depends on:

  • resolution;
  • frame rate;
  • motion;
  • visual detail;
  • codec;
  • destination.

As a useful technical reference, YouTube currently recommends around 8 Mbps for standard-frame-rate 1080p SDR uploads and 12 Mbps for high-frame-rate 1080p SDR uploads.

You do not need to copy YouTube’s numbers blindly for every network, but they provide a sensible reference point.

Practical starting ranges

For ordinary H.264 social exports, these are reasonable starting points rather than hard rules:

VBR vs CBR

For uploaded social video, VBR is usually a sensible choice.

VBR means variable bitrate.

The encoder can spend more data on difficult scenes and less on simple ones.

A static talking head against a plain wall does not need the same amount of data as confetti, grass, water, smoke, handheld movement, or detailed screen graphics.

CBR, or constant bitrate, is more relevant to situations where a fixed data rate is required, such as some live workflows.

For normal uploaded social media, VBR is often the better fit.

One-pass or two-pass encoding?

Two-pass encoding can allocate bitrate more intelligently because the encoder analyses the video before the final pass.

It can be useful when:

  • you have a strict file-size target;
  • the footage is difficult to compress;
  • you want to squeeze the best quality out of a limited bitrate.

For everyday social exports, modern one-pass encoders can be perfectly adequate, especially when you are not trying to hit an exact small file size.

The difference is often less important than starting from a clean source and choosing a sensible bitrate.

Audio export settings

For normal social video:

  • use AAC audio;
  • use stereo unless there is a specific reason not to;
  • 48 kHz is a solid standard sample rate;
  • avoid extremely low bitrates.

YouTube’s current encoding guidance supports AAC-LC and recommends 48 kHz sample rate.

You do not need studio-master audio data rates for a social clip, but speech and music should not sound obviously damaged before the platform even touches the file.

Colour space: use Rec.709 for normal SDR video

Colour-management mistakes are a common reason a video looks different after upload.

For standard dynamic range content, Rec.709 / BT.709 is the safest normal target.

YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR uploads.

This matters particularly when exporting from modern Apple devices or workflows that may use HDR, Display P3, or wide-colour footage.

If the video was accidentally edited or exported with incorrect colour tags, you can see:

  • washed-out contrast;
  • unexpected saturation;
  • gamma shifts;
  • dull colours.

If you are not intentionally publishing HDR, keep the workflow simple and consistent in Rec.709.

Should you upload 4K to social media?

Sometimes.

4K can be useful when:

  • the source is 4K;
  • the platform supports high-resolution playback;
  • the content contains fine detail;
  • you expect cropping or reframing;
  • YouTube is a major destination.

But 4K is not automatically better for every short social video.

A clean 1080 × 1920 vertical export can look excellent on a phone.

Uploading a giant file from a poor source does not create real detail.

Resolution cannot recover quality that was never captured.

Best vertical video export settings

For Reels, TikTok, Shorts, and Stories, start with:

  • Aspect ratio: 9:16
  • Resolution: 1080 × 1920 or a larger 9:16 equivalent
  • Codec: H.264

Best square video export settings

For square feed video:

  • Resolution: 1080 × 1080 or higher square equivalent
  • Codec: H.264
  • Container: MP4

Square is easy to reuse but increasingly less dominant than portrait and vertical formats.

Use it when it suits the placement rather than by habit.

Best horizontal video export settings

For YouTube and other horizontal placements:

  • Aspect ratio: 16:9
  • Resolution: commonly 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160
  • Codec: H.264
  • Container: MP4
  • Frame rate: match source

YouTube automatically adapts its player to other aspect ratios, but 16:9 remains the standard horizontal format.

Do not add black bars

Avoid baking letterboxing or pillarboxing into the exported file unless there is a deliberate creative reason.

Do not place a horizontal video in a vertical canvas just to avoid making a new version.

Platforms and devices handle aspect ratios themselves.

A native crop generally looks better than black space added around the content.

Why text often looks bad after upload

Text is difficult for video compression.

Thin strokes, tiny type, animated fine lines, and high-contrast edges can become messy after re-encoding.

To protect text:

These scenes contain subtle or constantly changing detail.

Should you sharpen before export?

A small amount of output sharpening can help in some workflows, but over-sharpening is dangerous.

Compression can exaggerate:

  • halos;
  • edge ringing;
  • noisy textures;
  • skin detail.

Do not try to “beat compression” by making the source artificially crunchy.

Start with a clean image and let the export remain natural.

Export from the original timeline

  3. download;
  4. edit again;
  5. export again;
  6. upload to another platform.

Every additional lossy encode can damage the image.

Keep a high-quality master or your original editing project and create platform exports from that source.

Regardless of editor, the logic is similar:

  1. set the timeline to the intended aspect ratio;
  2. keep the source frame rate where practical;
  3. finish colour correction;
  4. confirm SDR/HDR handling;
  5. export H.264 in MP4;
  6. use AAC audio;
  7. use VBR at a sensible bitrate;
  8. preview the finished file;
  9. upload that file directly.

Do not assume the export preset is correct simply because it contains the word “social.”

Common video export mistakes

Exporting 30 fps from 25 fps footage

This creates unnecessary frame conversion.

Using a very low bitrate to save space

Upload bandwidth is rarely worth visibly damaging the creative.

Exporting in the wrong colour space

This can cause washed-out or shifted colours.

Designing horizontal first and cropping vertical later

Framing, subtitles, and graphics usually suffer.

Using tiny text

Compression and small screens are an unforgiving combination.

Recompressing an already compressed file

Always return to the best available source.

A simple universal preset

If you need one safe starting point for ordinary SDR social video, use:

  • H.264
  • progressive
  • square pixels
  • Rec.709

  • VBR
  • 1080p or the correct 1080-wide vertical/square equivalent
  • roughly 8–12 Mbps for ordinary 1080p 24–30 fps content

Then adapt the aspect ratio and bitrate to the placement and footage.

There is no magic export setting that prevents every platform from recompressing your file.

The goal is simpler: give the platform a clean, correctly sized, correctly tagged source file with enough data to survive another encode.
